Toothpick
Ten years ago, running a dental practice meant paper charts, a fax machine, and a lot of guesswork on what to reorder. Today it looks nothing like that. The old way stopped scaling.
This read draws on Mordor Intelligence's Dental Services Market Report, 2025.
Consolidation broke manual ordering
The turning point was consolidation. As independent practices merged into Dental Support Organizations, groups like Heartland Dental (1,750+ practices) and The Aspen Group (1,100+), manual ordering and stock control broke down. The share of US dentists working independently fell from 84.7% in 2005 to 72.5% by 2024. In their place came centralized purchasing and automated inventory systems once reserved for hospital networks.
Software became the system of the practice
Software followed. Dentsply Sirona now calls digital workflow adoption "a category standard," not an option, and practice management platforms have grown from digital ledgers into what Technavio calls "the central nervous system of the modern dental practice." Cloud-based tools stripped away the cost of on-site infrastructure, so even solo practitioners can run enterprise-grade procurement.
What AI changed in the clinic
AI then layered on top, automating insurance claims and denial management, and cutting diagnostic time so sharply that X-ray exposure drops by more than 70%, with fewer repeat procedures and less waste along the way.
Mordor Intelligence's result: clinics that automated are pulling ahead. They deliver more care per hour of chair time at a lower cost, and they take market share from the ones that have not caught up yet.
What Toothpick is doing in the region
Toothpick is bringing this same shift to the region. The marketplace puts distributor procurement in one channel, with one order and one invoice. Toothpay and Toothpay Business take on the billing and payment work that used to sit in the back office. That gives practitioners time back and takes cost out of the chain.
The wider picture is in what Toothpick is. The same idea, from the founder's side, is in behind the build.
